High Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is a term used to describe the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries. It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). This measurement is also known as the systolic pressure and the diastolic pressure. The systolic pressure is the highest pressure that is recorded during a heartbeat. The diastolic pressure is the lowest pressure that is recorded during a normal heartbeat. Blood pressure is measured by taking the average of several readings taken over a period of time. The average reading is usually taken when the person is sitting quietly for 5 minutes.

The heart pumps blood through the arteries with every beat of the heart. The blood pressure is the amount of force exerted by the blood against the artery wall. The higher the blood pressure, the harder it is for the heart to pump blood through the arteries.

There are many factors that affect the blood pressure. These include:

* Age – The average blood pressure increases with age. For example, if you were born in 1960, your blood pressure would be about 120/80. If you were born in 1980, your blood pressure would be 140/90. If you were born in 1990, your blood pressure would be 150/100.

* Gender – Women tend to have lower blood pressures than men. The average blood pressure for women is about 100/60. For men, the average blood pressure is about 110/70.

* Race – Black people tend to have higher blood pressures than white people. The average blood pressure for black people is about 120/80. For white people, the average blood pressure is around 115/75.

* Obesity – People who are obese tend to have higher blood pressures. The average blood pressure for overweight people is about 130/85.

* Smoking – Smokers tend to have higher blood pressures because of the nicotine in cigarettes. The average blood pressure for smokers is about 120/80.

* Alcohol consumption – Heavy alcohol consumption can cause high blood pressure. The average blood pressure for heavy drinkers is about 135/85.

* Stress – People who are stressed tend to have higher blood pressures, especially if they do not get enough sleep. The average blood pressure for people who are under stress is about 120/80. If they get more sleep, their blood pressure will go down.
